Whitney Houston Memorial Scrapped

A public memorial for Whitney Houston has been scrapped.

Fans were expected to pile into Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Friday (17Feb12) for a service reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s huge Los Angeles send-off in 2009 and venue bosses had begun to make arrangements for the big event.

But on Tuesday morning (14Feb12), Carolyn Whigham, the spokesperson for the Whigham Funeral Home – where Houston’s body currently lies – said the family feels it has “shared” the superstar “for 30-something years with the city, with the state, with the world,” and relatives now insist, “This is their private time.”

And a representative for Newark Mayor Cory Booker tells Tmz.com, “In compliance with the family’s wishes the city is not moving forward with any public ceremony.”

Following her death on Saturday in Los Angeles (11Feb12) and an autopsy on Sunday (12Feb12), Houston’s body was flown to her native New Jersey on Monday (13Feb12) onboard a private plane owned by filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry, who is a close family friend.

The remains were transferred to the funeral home in a hearse early on Tuesday.

A private funeral will take place at Newark’s New Hope Baptist Church on Saturday (18Feb12) at noon.

Keystone Pipeline Bill Passes House, Lacks Match i

By Katarzyna Klimasinska

Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) — Legislation that would force U.S. approval of TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline and open Atlantic waters to offshore drilling passed the House, a measure that the Senate doesn’t plan to consider.

The bill, approved 237-187 yesterday, would strip President Barack Obama’s authority to decide on TransCanada’s $7 billion project and give the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission 30 days to approve the pipeline after it’s deemed safe.

Obama rejected Keystone last month and asked the Calgary- based company to find a route that wouldn’t endanger a Nebraska aquifer.

“This legislation would create hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs for American workers,” Representative Doc Hastings, a Washington Republican and chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, said during a floor debate. “It’s time to secure our own future with American-made energy.”

The measure is part of the House Republicans’ three-bill plan to add jobs, lower energy imports and finance highways and mass-transit programs. A portion of the revenue would come from giving oil producers access to federal waters off the coasts of California, Florida and Virginia. The House plans to complete action on the measures after taking a recess next week.

The House and Senate are examining proposals for funding projects from non-transportation sources. The House will next consider a measure forcing federal employees to pay more toward their pensions. The Senate began debating a separate measure last week, which doesn’t include a Keystone provision.

Wildlife Refuge

The House bill passed yesterday would permit energy production in a part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and oil-shale deposits of Colorado.

“We all know these places are not going to be developed in the near term at all,” Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said during a hearing at the House’s natural resources panel this week. “They will not fund the transportation needs of the United States of America.”

The bill would raise $4.28 billion by 2022, less than 10 percent of the revenue needed to pay for transportation projects, Representative Ed Markey of Massachusetts, senior Democrat on the committee, said on Feb. 15.

Democrats and environmental groups said the beaches of California and Florida are too pristine to risk being spoiled by an oil spill, while oil-shale production may taint Colorado’s drinking water sources.

NRDC Opposition

Keystone XL is opposed by groups such as the Natural Resources Defense Council and Sierra Club, that say the crude to be carried is corrosive and air pollution will increase during production and refining.

The number of people needed to operate and maintain the 1 Replica Watches,661-mile (2,673-kilometer) pipeline may be as few as 20, according to the U.S. State Department, or as many as a few hundred, according to TransCanada.

Senate Republicans on Feb. 15 introduced legislation that would bar the Obama administration from using the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve unless Keystone XL pipeline is approved.

The bill is H.R. 3408. The other measures are H.R. 3813 and H.R. 7.

Oil prices hit nine-month peak

OIL prices have hit nine-month highs after Iran halted sales to France and Britain, and as China eased credit policy amid expectations of a bailout deal for Greece.

The Brent and New York contracts reached $US121.15 and $US105.44 a barrel in early trading on Monday – the highest levels since May 5, 2011.

In late London deals, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in April stood at $US120.14 a barrel, up 56 cents compared with Friday’s closing level.

New York’s main contract, West Texas Intermediate light sweet crude for March, jumped $US1.84 to $US105.08.

"Iran’s decision to halt oil exports to France and Great Britain is commonly cited today as the reason for the price rise," said Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch.

"Since Iranian oil exports to both these countries are virtually negligible, however, the news is likely to have only a psychological effect, fuelling uncertainty on the oil market," Fritsch said.

"The fact that EU finance ministers are expected to approve further assistance for Greece this evening, plus the lowering of the reserve requirement ratio for banks in China, are providing the financial markets with positive ‘background noise’."

Iran on Sunday announced that it was halting its oil sales to France and Britain in retaliation for a phased European Union ban on its crude, which has yet to take full effect.

The decision is not expected to have a big impact as France last year bought only three per cent of its oil – 58,000 barrels per day – from Tehran, while Britain is believed to no longer be importing Iranian oil at all.

But it is seen as a warning shot to other EU nations that are much more dependent on imports from the Islamic republic, including Italy, Spain and Greece.

Tehran on Monday insisted it would cut oil exports to more EU nations if they remain "hostile".

Exports to Spain, Greece, Italy Replica Watches, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands would be stopped, deputy oil minister Ahmad Qalebani said, quoted by Mehr news agency.

"Certainly if the hostile actions of some European countries continue, the export of oil to these countries will be cut," said Qalebani, who runs the National Iranian Oil Company.

He added: "In the current market situation, the price per barrel (of oil) will probably reach $US150."

Analysts said the move to cut exports to Britain and France was largely symbolic.

"This latest move by Iran has not led to a price rise because it is going to lead to shortages of fuel in the UK and France, the price rise is more a reflection of concerns about the further escalation in tensions between Iran and the West," said Caroline Bain, commodities analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit research group.

Iran pumps 3.5 million barrels per day, of which it exports 2.5 million barrels, making it the world’s fourth biggest oil producer.

Oil traders also reacted to news at the weekend that China’s central bank decided to cut commercial banks’ reserve requirement ratio by 0.50 percentage points from February 24 to ease restrictions on lending.

The reduction by the People’s Bank of China in the amount banks must hold in reserve will bring the ratio for most large banks to 20.5 per cent, effectively increasing the amount they can lend, Xinhua news agency reported.

The move is a sign the government is continuing to ease restrictions put in place to curb surging inflation and property prices, and follows the central bank’s last cut announced on November 30, which took effect on December 5.

"Crude oil, copper and a number of other financial markets received a boost from the policy rate cut," said Prestige Economics president Jason Schenker.

Meanwhile, there were growing signs that a new bailout for Greece could be finalised at last. Greece said on Monday it was confident a deal would be found to seal the country’s eurozone future with a new bailout but key partners demanded strict surveillance of the Athens government.

Petroplus Cut by S&P as Reports Tout BP, Socar as

(Updates with S&P comment in fourth paragraph.)

Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) — Petroplus Holdings AG, the Swiss refiner fighting to avoid bankruptcy, had its rating cut again by Standard & Poor’s after the suspension of credit lines forced it to scale back operations.

The rating company lowered Petroplus’s long-term rating to CC from CCC+, according to a statement today. BP Plc may try to help the company and Socar Trading Co., a unit of Azerbaijan’s state-backed energy company, is interested in buying one of Petroplus’s refineries, media reports said.

Petroplus has shut down production at three of its five European refineries and its remaining two are running at reduced capacity as the credit freeze prevents it from buying crude to process. The company reached a temporary agreement with creditors last week to keep plants at Coryton, U.K. and Ingolstadt, Germany running.

“We now believe a payment default could occur in the near term,” S&P said in the statement. “The company’s limited ongoing operations will not cover its high fixed costs and interest payments due in March, April and May 2012.”

Shares of the Zug, Switzerland-based company fell as much as 10 percent and were 8.9 percent lower at 1.33 francs as of 2:33 p.m. in Zurich.

Financial Lifeline

Petroplus has received about 3 million barrels of crude at the U.K. facility since Dec. 31. BP is “monitoring the situation carefully,” David Nicholas, a London-based spokesman for Europe’s second-largest oil company, said on Jan. 15. The Sunday Times reported that BP is considering throwing Petroplus a financial lifeline.

Coryton, running at 45 percent of its 220,000 barrel-a-day capacity, is due to receive a fifth tanker since the end of December. The Lian Xing Hu, which has shipped average cargoes of about 58 Victorian-Neoclassicism oil paintings,000 metric tons over the past six months, will arrive on Jan. 21 from the Black Sea, according to AISLive ship- tracking data on Bloomberg.

Socar is interested in buying Petroplus’s refinery in Cressier Men oil paintings, Switzerland, RSR radio reported, citing Thierry Grosjean, the head of economy in Neuchatel, the canton where the plant is based. Grosjean wasn’t immediately available for comment and a call to Socar Trading in Geneva wasn’t returned.

S&P last month reduced Petroplus’s long-term credit rating to CCC+ from B amid a “sharp deterioration in the company’s liquidity position,” it said at the time.

Ricky Gervais Clears Up 2011 Globes Jokes In U.S. Magazine Column

Funnyman Ricky Gervais has addressed the jokes that landed him in trouble after last year’s (11) Golden Globes as part of a column he has written for the new issue of Entertainment Weekly.

Gervais has been asked back as the Globes host and he’ll return to face many of the people who were offended by his gags next week (15Jan12) – but he insists those who attacked him for his mean-spirited wisecracks should take a moment to consider why they were so appalled.

Before addressing the individual jokes, he writes, “The simple fact is, offence is taken, not given. It’s up to you if you’re offended or not. And remember, just because you’re offended, it doesn’t mean you’re right.”

The British comic admits he loves “exploring taboos” and likes to take an audience to “places it hasn’t gone before,” suggesting his performance at this year’s (12) Golden Globes will be just as sharp-witted as it was a year ago.

Gervais then breaks down four jokes from the 2011 prizegiving, particularly ones about Hugh Hefner’s then-upcoming marriage and the Sex & The City cast that prompted many to call the funnyman ageist.

He writes, “(I said) ‘Congratulations to Hugh Hefner, who’s getting married at the age of 84 to 24-year-old beauty Crystal Harris. When she was asked why she was marrying him she said, ‘Because he lied about his age. He told me he was 94.’ Ageist? I don’t think so. I was suggesting that maybe the romance was based on something other than love…”

And on comments Kim Cattrall made after Gervais joked about the age of the Sex & The City stars, suggesting the posters for the movie sequel were heavily “airbrushed”, the comedian writes, “Kim Cattrall believed this to be ageist. But she’s wrong. It’s the opposite. Why airbrush a poster of middle-aged women to make them look 25…? The joke is about bowing to societal pressure to appeal to shallow audiences.”

In the column, Gervais also addresses jokes he made at the expense of Robert Downey, Jr. and celebrity Scientologists.

Sir Anthony Hopkins Sneaks Out Of A Window To Escape Angry Directors

Sir Anthony Hopkins coached fellow actor Dustin Hoffman on how to avoid upsetting movie directors – and advised him to jump out of a window to escape a huge bust-up onset.

The Rain Man star was chatting to his fellow Oscar winner during the early years of his career and brought up the subject of how to inject his creative input on a film set without clashing with bosses.

Sir Anthony gave him several pointers on avoiding a heated confrontation, before telling Hoffman his secret tactic to escape from a bust-up with the director.

Hoffman says, “We were talking about what do you do when you’re not getting along with a director. He said, ‘Never raise your voice. Never have a fight. Wherever you’re shooting, make sure you’re shooting on the ground floor. When it gets to that point, you say, ‘Excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom.’ You checked the bathroom out earlier. It has a window. You go in the bathroom. You lock the door. You climb out the window. You go home. You come back the next day. There’s no argument anymore.’
